  • Issue #1A
    Local (2005) 1A
Published Nov 2005 by Oni Press.

First Printing. by Brian Wood & Ryan Kelly. A brand new 12-issue series from the co-creator of the critically acclaimed Demo! We all come from somewhere, and whether it's the big city or a small town, it's part of what makes us who we are. Some people spend their whole life trying to escape, others never want to leave. Each self-contained single issue of Local sees everyday people faced with life-changing choices that will affect not only themselves, but their friends, family, and the community they live in as well. Issue #1 introduces us to Portland, Oregon resident Megan McKeenan as she finds herself in sticky situation she needs to get out of, fast. In that crucial split-second, Megan lives out the possible repercussions of her choice. MATURE THEMES 7x10, 32pgs, B&W (1 of 12)SRP: $2.99 REVIEW BY LONE STAR COMICS GENERAL MANAGER AARON SETTLE: Brian Wood's Demoo is one of my favorite books of all time. I loved the ambitiousness of it, twelve self contained stories that each told the story of the most important day in the lives of twelve very different characters. It was a fresh take on superpowers and unlike anything else on the comic shelves. So when I heard Brian Wood had a new twelve issue series coming from Oni Press I was at first excited, but that slowly turned to apprehension. What if he just did the same thing over again? Would that lessen my love for Demo? It turns out I need not have worried. Local only has a few things in common with Demo and most of them have more to do with quality than story points. Local will be twelve issues, each set in a different city and exploring how environments influence stories. The other cool difference is that this time there is a recurring character, Megan McKeenan. Megan will be in each issue, although not always as the main character. And every issue takes place a year later, so in the course of the series Megan goes from an eighteen year-old over her head to a slightly more mature thirty year old. The first issue is set in Portland, Oregon and follows Megan as she is forced to make a life altering choice. We get to see the multitude of options she has and where each will lead her until she finally makes her choice. Wood's writing is still top notch and Ryan Kelly's art is a perfect match for the story. If you liked Demo, you need to give Local a chance. REVIEW BY LONE STAR COMICS CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER GREG THOMPSON: Brian Wood returns to the 12 issue/one shot story series that worked so well in Demo. This time around, it's stories about people and their hometowns. This first issue focuses on Megan McKennan, a girl from Portland, OR who has gotten herself into a sticky situation and needs to get out fast. In the split-second she weighs her options, she sees her future unfold. As with Demo, these stories will be extremely personal and give the viewer a voyeuristic view into the lives of Wood's creations. If you are yearning to find a voice who can identify with you, you probably want to give this a shot. Brian Wood is wonderful at touching on everyday emotions. Cover price $2.99.

    1st printing.

Written by Grace Ellis. Art and cover by Brittney L. Williams.

From New York Times bestselling author Grace Ellis (Lumberjanes) and artist Brittney Williams (Goldie Vance) comes a new story about 13-year-old Lois Lane as she navigates the confusing worlds of social media and friendship.

It's the first day of summer break in the sleepy town of Liberty View, and young Lois Lane bursts onto the scene with what she knows is a sure-to-go-viral video channel. Okay, maybe her platform only receives two views a week (thanks, Mom), and maybe her best friend, Kristen, isn't quite as enthusiastic about social media, but when Lois sets her mind on something, there's no turning back.

At the end of the week, the big neighborhood barbecue and bike race will be the perfect backdrop to Lois and Kristen's #friendshipchallenge video. But when the girls find out the annual fireworks are missing, Lois doubles down on her efforts for fame, testing her friendship in ways she couldn't imagine.

With Kristen leaving for sleepaway camp after the barbecue and a new girl on the block taking all of Kristen's attention, will Lois be able to find the missing fireworks, celebrate the summer, and post the best #friendshipchallenge the internet has ever seen? Or will she have to face her challenges IRL?
