Written by Si Spencer Art by Simon Gane & Cameron Stewart Cover by Sean Phillips Noted British television writer Si Spencer (Eastenders, Torchwood, Bad Girls) presents a sharp, unforgettable cadence in THE VINYL UNDERGROUND, a 21st century cross between THE INVISIBLES and CSI that brings rich social and political context to the dark, glittering cesspool that is London. Spencer is joined by indie creator/penciller Simon Gane (Paris, Punk Strips) and Eisner-nominated artist Cameron Stewart (the Other Side, SeaGuy) with bold, captivating covers by by Sean Phillips (The Invisibles, Criminal). In this fast-paced, ultra-cool ongoing crime-noir series, an unlikely quartet of occult detectives secretly solve crimes - from DJ crack bars in Camden to the elegant, high-society ballrooms that make up modern London. The Vinyl Underground is led by Morrison Shepherd, a D-list celebrity darling, soul DJ, and son of an ex-footballer. Fresh out of prison and off a nasty coke habit, Morrison is joined by a fellow ex-con named Perv, whose seizures give him clues to crimes long before the cops, and Leah, a gorgeous morgue assistant who leads a double life online and represents the brawn of the team. Morrison's ex-flame Abi is reluctantly forced to join the team when her father is implicated for murder. A young boy's head (with diamonds in the eye sockets) washes up on the edge of the Thames and seems to be connected to a series of ritual killings, a drug called Khat, and Muti magic. Can they get to the bottom of it? Cover price $2.99.

1st printing. Written by Pat Thomas. From the late 1950s to the mid-70s, work by contributors like Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Amiri Baraka, Eldridge Cleaver, Tim Leary, Dennis Hopper, Jean Genet, Jerry Rubin, Bernadette Devlin, and Germaine Greer regularly appeared in the countercultural magazine Evergreen Review. Their subversive work and radical politics defined outsider literature for an entire generation. Edited by Barney Rosset of Grove Press, Evergreen Review was a quarterly illustrated/photography driven reflection of that genre. For the first time ever since their original print date, full color reproductions of all front covers of all 100 issues of the Evergreen Review from 1957 to 1973, plus hundreds of pages from many of the issues are reprinted exactly as they looked then – with all illustrations, photography, even the ads for other books, albums, letters to the editor, subscription offers, etc. – left intact! Historian Pat Thomas interviewed original 1960s era Evergreen staffers to get the inside scoop on the day-to-day operation of the magazine, and those conversations join new essays looking back on this golden era by John Oakes, Loren Glass, Kasia Boddy, Dale Peck, Ethan Persoff, Ken Jordan and Stanley Gontarski. Will this new Evergreen Review change the world as it did in the 1960s? Of course it will! Hardcover, 9-in. x 12-in., 320 pages, full color. Cover price $34.99.

1st printing. Story and art by Jason Novak. With a stylistic nod to the wordless novels of Frans Maserell and the expressionist drawings of Franz Kafka himself, Jason Noivak's short graphic novel Kafka's Manuscript begins at the author's deathbed, where he entrusts his friend Max Brod with the task of destroying his unpublished papers. Brod refuses, and what follows is the story of how Kafka's literary legacy escaped Europe under the shadow of fascism. It is a survey of Kafka's paranoid landscape in kinetoscopic monochrome. As a master of deadpan satire, Kafka was as eloquent with both words as he was with what was left unsaid. Kafka's Cartoonist Jason Novak seizes upon the unsaid to comment on Kafka's afterlife, exploring in a new way what countless books about Kafka have previously attempted to explore with words. Every epoch has its conundrums, but the qualities that unite our age with Kafka's are a reminder that some characteristics of a culture are perennial. What better way to capture Kafka's enduring but evasive voice than with pantomime? This book is wordless with pages only on the recto; for the press preview, I removed the blank verso pages. Softcover, 5-in.x 7-in., 132 pages, B&W. Cover price $20.00.

1st printing. Story and art by Frances Jetter. In a uniquely told immigrant story, visual artist Frances Jetter connects her own life to her ancestors' and their ties to the labor movement. The narrative begins with Abram, a passionate advocate in his union but a tyrant at home, revealing the contradictions that make up his life and so many others. Some pages depict the struggle of workers, others are haunting vignettes of abandoned dolls and forgotten friends. It's also a love letter to Jetter's mother who hovers in the artist's mind like a ghost. There is a profound, understated moral power in Jetter's remembrance of loved ones, etching their essences in the same linoleum material that made up the floors of her childhood. When he uses a strand of hair to clone a companion; its successful, but she immediately leaves him for greener pastures. So, he clones another potential companion. And that one leaves. And again. And again. Soon, multiple clones begin causing confusion and havoc around town. Meanwhile, one of the errant clones makes a pact with the devil that goes awry and strands Satan in town, forcing him to get a job. Justin Gradins sophomore graphic novel (after 2023s Mystic Debris) combines keen verbal and visual wit with a host of memorable characters — Mandrake the Soda Jerk, private investigator Butterfly Latté, pop superstar Attilla the Hunny, and many more—to create an anarchic, absurdist comedy about lonely souls and the lonely soulless. Pure comics, Gradins work has echoes of Gary Panter, Gary Leib, Marc Bell, and Mark Beyer (and even some other cartoonists who may or may not be named Gary or Mark) while remaining a singular, sui generis voice in contemporary comics. Softcover, 8 1/2-in. x 10-in., 180 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $29.99.

1st printing. Story and art by Anna Haifisch. Dogs in colorful sweatshirts, the glowing signs of a Vietnamese fast-food restaurant, solitary palm trees above the pavement: READY AMERICA takes us on a ride through a both strangely familiar and quite alien Los Angeles. Packaging inscriptions, neon signs, and billboards fuse into an appealing typographic montage while familiar American icons peek out between stores and offices, clinics, and morgues. With her unmistakable wit, Anna Haifisch highlights the idiosyncrasies of a country in which catastrophes seem just as ordinary as the sight of a coyote in the Hollywood Hills. Softcover, 7-in. x 11-in., 48 pages, full color. Cover price $19.99.

Story and art by Safdar Ahmed.
Safdar Ahmed visited Sydney's Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in 2011. He brought pencils and sketchwith him and began drawing with the detainees. Weaving journalism, history, and autobiography, Still Alive is an intensely personal indictment of Australia's refugee detention policies and procedures, which are not unlike those in many Western nations. It is also a searching reflection on the redemppower of art. (And death metal.)
