1st printing. By Karl Stock. The influence of the comic book has never been greater, from movies to streaming and beyond, but the journey comics took from little-regarded kids' magazines to literary prize-winning books and global franchises turned on a highly unusual group of writers and artists. Few would have expected a small gathering of British comic book fans and creators in the early 'seventies to be a global cultural pivot-point, but this was the start of a disparate movement of punks, dropouts and disaffected youths who reinvented a medium and became the imaginative heart of a global success story. Based on years of interviews with a generation of leading writers, artists and editors, Karl Stock reveals the true story of the wild times, passion and determination that helped, hindered and saw the reinvention of comics. Hardcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 500 pages, B&W. Cover price $32.99.

1st Printing - It is safe to say that comic books are not just for kids anymore. As American codes of ethics, aesthetics, and semiotics have evolved, so too has the comic book developed as a genre for presenting the weightier matters of history. Here in a new view of one of literature's former lightweights, the comic book, a medium that once was considered exclusively for juvenile trash literature, is given full-length study as a serious narrative form. Three gifted artists who turned to comic books for expressing sober intent - Jack Jackson, Art Spiegelman, and Harvey Pekar - are credited with it's transformation. They have presented history, autobiography, tragedy, and even the Holocaust in the modes of the conventional comic book - but with a difference. In Jackson's "Los Tejanos and Comanche Moon", in Spiegelman's "Maus: A Survivor's Tale", and in Pekar's "American Splendor" the comics form has been given additional range in tone, style, and subject matter. Here in an appreciation of the serious aims of such creative artists and their acclaimed achievement is a study that takes comics to be dead serious. Softcover, 6" x 9", 164 pages, B&W.

By Shawna Kidman.
Comic books wielded their influence from the margins and in-between spaces of the entertainment business for half a century before moving to the center of mainstream film and television production. This extraordinary history begins at the medium's origin in the 1930s, when comics were a reviled, disorganized, and lowbrow mass medium. Visiting critical moments along the way, Shawna Kidman concludes this revisionist history in the early 2000s, when Hollywood had fully incorporated comic book properties and strategies into its business models. The medium had transformed into the heavily exploited, exceedingly corporate, and highly esteemed art form we know so well today.

1st printing. By Ron Lackmann. During the memorable years when Radio was America's favorite home entertainment medium, the airwaves were permeated with all sorts of programming. There were the daytime dramas of domestic stress and five-day-a-week children's adventure serials. There were even adaptations of great works of the theater and literature. From Archie Andrews to Tom Mix, all radio characters and programs that ever stemmed from a comic book or comic strip in radio's golden age are collected here, for the first time, in an easy-to-read, A through Z book! Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 206 pages, B&W. NOTE: The indicia says 2004, but this book was released 02/2012. Cover price $19.95.

1st printing. Edited by Benjamin Woo and Jeremy Stoll. The Comics World: Comic Books, Graphic Novels, and Their Publics is the first collection to explicitly examine the production, circulation, and reception of comics from a social-scientific point of view. Taking the concept of a "comics world"-that is, the collection of people, roles, and institutions that "produce" comics as they are-as its organizing principle, the book asks readers to attend to the contexts that shape how comics move through societies and cultures. Through their research, contributors demonstrate some of the ways that people participate in comics worlds and how the relationships created in these spaces can provide different perspectives on comics and comics studies. Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 268 pages, Text only. Cover price $30.00.
