Volume 5 - 1st printing. "1948!" Collects Frankenstein Comics (1945-1954) #11-15. Written by Roy Thomas. Art and cover by Dick Briefer. Dick Briefer's Frankenstein for Prize Comics is widely regarded as being America's first ongoing horror series. Indeed, it was Briefer's work that probably caused the creature to be actually named as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley's novel. Splitting the stories between two stools - humor and horror - Briefer's tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts. Some of the humorous material has already been reprinted, though not necessarily in order nor in total. Until now, of course! Hardcover, 240 pages, full color. Cover price $47.99.

Volume 5-6 - 1st printing. Story and art by Katsuhisa Kigitsu. Translated by Jocelyne Allen. Adapted by Shanti Whitesides. Somewhere, out in the sticks of rural Japan, there is a mysterious manor that is home to the greatest surgeon who ever lived. Actually, the surgeon hasn't been seen for years, but Fran, his reanimated daughter, takes up the family profession in his stead. Starting with the bolts that protrude from her head, Fran isn't exactly what you would call a normal girl, nor is the cast of horribly disfigured creatures who join her. Despite her Frankenstein-like ways, Fran cares deeply for her patients and holds steadfastly to the Hippocratic Oath. Her creed is: "All lives must be saved, no matter the cost!" For Franken Fran, the ends always justify the means, no matter what ungodly creations emerge from her lab. Softcover, 5-in. x 7-in., 384 pages, B&W. Older Teen 16+ Cover price $19.99.
