    By Shawna Kidman.

Comic books wielded their influence from the margins and in-between spaces of the entertainment business for half a century before moving to the center of mainstream film and television production. This extraordinary history begins at the medium's origin in the 1930s, when comics were a reviled, disorganized, and lowbrow mass medium. Visiting critical moments along the way, Shawna Kidman concludes this revisionist history in the early 2000s, when Hollywood had fully incorporated comic book properties and strategies into its business models. The medium had transformed into the heavily exploited, exceedingly corporate, and highly esteemed art form we know so well today.

1st printing. Edited by Benjamin Woo and Jeremy Stoll. The Comics World: Comic Books, Graphic Novels, and Their Publics is the first collection to explicitly examine the production, circulation, and reception of comics from a social-scientific point of view. Taking the concept of a "comics world"-that is, the collection of people, roles, and institutions that "produce" comics as they are-as its organizing principle, the book asks readers to attend to the contexts that shape how comics move through societies and cultures. Through their research, contributors demonstrate some of the ways that people participate in comics worlds and how the relationships created in these spaces can provide different perspectives on comics and comics studies. Filled with activities, Comics: Easy as ABC is a fun way for young readers to effortlessly and playfully start thinking like writers and artists.

This simple guide is also aimed at parents, teachers, and librarians: all will enjoy learning the ABCs of this popular and rapidly growing medium. Children kindergarten-age and up are shown how to use basic shapes to make faces, eyes, noses, and design their own characters. Ivan Brunetti's funny and incisive advice on the language of comics (panels, lettering, balloons, and so much more) naturally leads budding artists and writers into thinking about their characters, settings, and prompts.

A section with essential tips on how to read comics with young children rounds out the package.

1st printing. The first ever edition of a new genre of comics. The authors have taken public domain comics from the 1940's, 50's and 60's, rewritten the captions and dialogue to create completely new stories with a comedic twist. The result is a hilarious and unique collection of re-purposed comic tales illustrated by the great names of the Golden and Silver Age. Root for superhero Scott Gigawatt who defeats the forces of evil by singing uncool Country and Western songs which cause his adversaries to explode. Thrill to the adventures of Captain Covid, the world's first socially distanced detective as he tries saving the world from a more lethal strain of COVID-19 by punching a lot of people in the face. Worry for Laverne, the good blonde gone bad as she ditches her sleazy-rider boyfriend Brandon and kickstarts a new relationship with a handsome shaman in a polo-neck sweater. And shiver in fear as Frank and Gina find themselves dragged back to the 18th century and discover, to their horror, that there is no 5G phone coverage. COMICS REBUBBLED takes stories of raw human emotion and peril-and treats them with disdain and disrespect. It's new, it's different, it's irreverent-and it's funny. Softcover, 9-in. x 11-in., 88 pages, full color. Cover price $18.99.
