    By David Kunzle.

Cham, real name Count Amédée de Noé and a serious rival to Daumier, may have been the epitome of a célèbre inconnu, a famous unknown. He is one much deserving, at last, of this fi rst account of his huge oeuvre as a caricaturist.

This book concentrates on his mastery of the important newcomer to the field of caricature, which we call comic strip, picture story, and graphic novel. The volume features facsimiles of nearly twenty of these from 1839 to 1863 and ranging from one page to forty (this last a parody of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables).

In addition, summaries and sample illustrations of twenty-seven "minor works" demonstrate that Cham is by far the most important specialist of what was then a new genre in Europe.

    Hardcover, 10-in. x 13-in., 538 pages, PC.

    Cover price $90.00.

1st printing. Written by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld. Art and cover by Ed Laroche. In this stunningly illustrated graphic novel, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's life as a social justice advocate comes to life through the story of a high school student whose promising basketball career is in jeopardy. Monk Travers is the star basketball player on his high school team. Confident about his future as an NBA player, he doesnt see the point in caring much about school, let alone his community. But his world is about to change—big time! After getting caught graffitiing his team's rival school, Monk comes to the awful realization that his actions have put his place on the team—and his future—in jeopardy. Hes taken by surprise when his coach offers him an unorthodox way to atone: completing a report on the life of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Monk is ecstatic. He knows all Kareems records and stats. He smugly announces that the project will be a snap, but his excitement is short-lived when Coach tells him that the project is not about Kareems basketball career—its about his life as an advocate for change. As Monk grudgingly begins his research, he discovers a history of struggles, conflicts, frustrations, and violence that hed never been aware of, awakening a passion for social justice that rivals Kareems own. Authored by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself, alongside longtime collaborator Raymond Obstfeld, and vividly illustrated by artist Ed Laroche, CHAMPION highlights and celebrates Kareems work for good like never before, inspiring fans of all ages. Hardcover, 128 pages, full color. All Ages Cover price $26.99.

Story and art by Mark Crilley.

On her quest to turn her story into a comic book, Emily visits her comic book shop and local comics convention, where she meets three mentors. Trudy, a high school student working on comics of her own, teaches Emily how to create expressive characters and how art can convey action and suspense.

Madeline, a self-published manga artist, teaches Emily how to use panel composition and layout to tell a story visually and how to develop a comic from script to sketch to finished pages. Sophie, a professional graphic novelist, guides Emily through fine-tuning the details of dialogue, sequence, and pacing to lead readers through the story.

Each lesson builds off the previous information and skills presented, and the sequential art format provides the perfect vehicle for step-by-step instruction.

1st printing. Edited by Benjamin Woo and Jeremy Stoll. The Comics World: Comic Books, Graphic Novels, and Their Publics is the first collection to explicitly examine the production, circulation, and reception of comics from a social-scientific point of view. Taking the concept of a "comics world"-that is, the collection of people, roles, and institutions that "produce" comics as they are-as its organizing principle, the book asks readers to attend to the contexts that shape how comics move through societies and cultures. Through their research, contributors demonstrate some of the ways that people participate in comics worlds and how the relationships created in these spaces can provide different perspectives on comics and comics studies. Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 268 pages, Text only. Cover price $30.00.

1st printing. Based on the Poems and Stories by Edgar Allen Poe. Art and cover by Pete Katz. "In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore..." On a dreary winter night, a grief-stricken man sits alone reading by a dying fire when there is a tap at the window. He goes to investigate and there enters a Raven. But what does this bird want? Is it friend of some kind of demon? And why does it keep repeating the phrase "Nevermore?" In this graphic adaptation of "The Raven," Edgar Allen Poe's most celebrated narrative poen is brought to life by Pete Katz's superbly dark illustrations, along with several of his short stories. In "The Fall of the House of Usher" a portent of doom lingers over an ancestral family home, while in "The Masque of the Red Death" an horrific plague threatens to consume humanity. "The Black Cat" features a cat who knows too much and a man who pays the ultimate price, and in "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether" a curious visitor gets more than he bargained for at a sinister asylum. All will incite that sensation particular to the Gothic genre: a pleasing fear or dread. Softcover, 6 1/2-in. x 9-in., 160 pages, full color.

Encyclopedia of Early Earth GN (2013 LBC) A Graphic Novel by Isabel Greenberg 1-1ST

1st printing. Story and art by Isabel Greenberg. Before our history began, another, now forgotten, civilization thrived. The people who roamed Early Earth were much like us: curious, emotional, funny, ambitious, and vulnerable. In this series of illustrated and linked tales, Isabel Greenberg chronicles the explorations of a young man as he paddles from his home in the North Pole to the South Pole. There, he meets his true love, but their romance is ill-fated. Early Earth's unusual and finicky polarity means the lovers can never touch. As intricate and richly imagined as the work of Chris Ware, and leavened with a dry wit that rivals Kate Beaton's in Hark! A Vagrant, Isabel Greenberg's debut will be a welcome addition to the thriving graphic novel genre. Hardcover, 176 pages, full color. Cover price $23.00.
