    1st printing.

Written by Micky Neilson. Art by Marc Borstel and Todd Warger.

In 1925 the KKK in Indiana counted one third of the state's white population among its ranks. It was seen as a very patriotic, pro-working class organization. However, the case of Madge Oberholtzer would change that forever.

Madge worked for D.C. Stephenson, a powerful politician in Indiana and former KKK Grand Dragon who led a coup dividing the Northern Klan. On March 15th, Stephenson and his henchmen abducted Madge at gunpoint and took her to Chicago, where Stephnson called himself the "law in Indiana" and proceeded to brutally beat and victimize her. Before succumbing to her injuries, Madge provided a full statement of her abuse, exposing the depths of Indiana's political corruption and lay bare the true face of the Ku Klux Klan, a revelation that would have a ripple effect on America's impression of the Klan from that day forward.

King A Comics Biography TPB (2021 Fantagraphics) The Complete Edition 1-1ST

    (see more images)

1st printing. Collects King GN (1993-2003 Fantagraphics) Vol. 1-3.

Story and art by Ho Che Anderson. Introduction by Stanley Crouch.

Ho Che Anderson's biography traces King's life from his childhood in Atlanta and his education at Booker T. Washington High School, and his subsequent centrality to the civil rights movement when, in 1955, he organized the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott; his founding of the Southern Christian leadership Conference in 1957; his Nobel Prize in 1964; his help in organizing the 1966 March on Washington and his "I Have a Dream" speech; and the tragic moment on April 4, 1968 when he was shot dead on the balcony of the Loraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee.

Anderson's expressionistic visual style is wrought with dramatic energy; panels evoke a painterly attention to detail but whose juxtapositions propel King's story with cinematic momentum. Anderson's successful use of the comics form to tell a major work of nonfiction has drawn favorable comparisons to Art Spiegelman's Maus: A survivor's Tale and Joe Sacco's Safe Area Gorazde: The War In Eastern Bosnia 1992-1995.

King won a1995 Parents' Choice Award.

Softcover, 228 pages, full color. Mature Readers
