The fabled Eerie ashcan edition is technically the first issue of the magazine. It was released in a hurry to prevent Eerie Publications from using the title of Warren's second horror magazine. Two-hundred copies were printed, but never distributed through traditional means (though some made their way to newsstands). Stories in this issue (which were published in Creepy) include: Image of Bluebeard by Bill Pearson and Joe Orlando; Death Plane by Larry Ivie and George Evans; and The Invitation by Larry Englehart, Russ Jones, Maurice Whitman, and Manny Stallman. Cover art by Jack Davis. Bootleg editions have been known to circulate among the collector's market. This is the FIRST PRINTING - B & W, 5 1/4" wide x 7 1/4 high, evenly trimmed. On page 18, panel 5, in the upper-left hand corner, the large rear view of a bald headed man blends into solid black and is unrecongnizable. Overall printing quality is poor. The SECOND PRINTING is also B & W, 5 1/4" wide x 7 1/4" high, with uneven, untrimmed edges (if one of these were trimmed evenly, the size would be less than indicated). The figure of the bald headed man on page 18, panel 5 is clear and discernable. The staples have a 1/4" blue stripe. Cover price $0.35.

    AVON : EERIE COMICS #1 January 1947

It was January 1947 that the first real, indisputable horror comic came along - EERIE COMICS #1, published by Avon. It had a striking cover that was, well… eerie, depicting a strange-looking man with a knife on the steps of some sort of ruin, approaching a bound woman - a theme that was to be repeated countless times in the future . . . Whet your appetite on these horrors inside including The Eyes of the Tiger by Bob Fujitani featuring a pet tiger who gets his first taste for blood - no surprises there then? Dead Mans Tale by Jon Small gives us the story of a bottle that gave Myron Morgan wealth and how he died when it was destroyed. The Man-Eating Lizards by Joe Kubert, when a plane goes down in the ocean, the surviving crew members find themselves on an island of giant, man-eating lizards.

The Strange Case of Henpecked Harry by Fred Kida, tells how Harry Horton plots the death of his wife, only to be driven mad by the guilt. Its hard to point to a particular source or inspiration, such as radio or the pulps, for any of these stories as they were not adaptations and didnt come from any existing series - yet here they are, together as probably the worlds first true horror comic!

    Softcover, 36 pages, B&W.

1st printing. 1981-2006! By Eerie Von. From the deepest depths of punk rock's 1970s primordial wastelands, through the stygian goth swamps of the 1980s, and on into the bloodstained arenas of 1990s heavy metal, Eerie Von witnessed it all. Beginning as the unofficial photographer for punk legends The Misfits and later taking charge of the bass guitar as a founding member of underground pioneers Samhain and metal gods Danzig, the evil eye of Eerie Von's camera captured the dark heart of rock's most vital and bleeding-edge period, a time when rock and roll was not only dangerous, but downright menacing. Eerie Von's lens has documented everything from The Misfits' humble beginnings in Lodi, New Jersey, to the heights of Danzig's stadium-rock glory alongside metal superstars Metallica. As well as an essential visual document of music history, Eerie's road stories of triumph and damnation bring to life an era the likes of which will never again be seen. An essential historical photographic document of some of the most influential bands of punk, goth, and rock by Eerie Von. Features over 250 photos and a full-color tip-in poster! Hardcover, 8 1/2-in. x 11-in., 160 pages, full color. Cover price $29.95.
