I, Rene Tardi, Prisoner of War in Stalag IIB HC (2018-2020 FB) SET

    (see more images)

Includes Vol. 1-3 (with Slipcase) - Printings May Vary. Story and art by Jacques Tardi. The complete three-part saga of French comics master Jacques Tardi's gripping and humane biographical portrait of his father's life as a soldier during WWII. When French tank crewman René Tardi was captured by the Germans on May 22, 1940, his life was forever changed. He is shipped off to a P.O.W. camp, Stalag IIB, where he endures a brutal day-to-day existence for nearly five years. Once the war winds down, he faces a long, grueling journey back to France, buoyed only by the vision of his wife Henriette awaiting him at home. The final act finds René struggling to adapt to civilian life, begrudgingly re-enlisting, and returning to Germany to help rebuild the country that imprisoned him. In THE COMPLETE I, RENE TARDI, P.O.W., cartoonist Jacques Tardi vividly renders his father's harrowing story, a story enriched with his own childhood memories. Both an homage to his father and a testament to the silent suffering of a generation of men scarred by war, Tardi's graphic novel trilogy is a personal and artistic triumph. This box set also features a slew of fascinating contextual features, including reference photographs, excerpts of René's notebooks, and several illuminating essays. Hardcover (3 Volumes with Slipcase), 9-in. x 12-in., 528 pages (Total), B&W. Cover price $99.99.

I, Rene Tardi, Prisoner of War in Stalag IIB HC (2018-2020 FB) 1-1ST

    (see more images)

    Volume 1 - 1st printing.

Story and art by Jacques Tardi.

In September 1939, René Tardi went to war. Less than a year later, the French army was defeated and he was a prisoner of war, like 1.6 million other French soldiers. After 4 years and 8 months in a POW camp, René returned home, bitter and ashamed. Stalag IIB is Jacques Tardi's homage to his father and a testimony to the silent suffering of a generation of men.

Based on René's memories, Stalag IIB - the first of two volumes - recounts brutal years of captivity under the Nazis and the POWs' attempts to reclaim moments of humanity. René recalls the roll calls in sub-zero temperatures, daily acts of resistance, crushing boredom - and especially the omnipresent hunger. With four decades of cartooning and almost two dozen graphic novels behind him, Jacques Tardi masterfully recreates historical and personal details with remarkable fidelity, guided by extensive research and his father's notes. Featuring some of Tardi's most intense and meticulous drawing, punctuated by somber greys and punches of red and blue rendered beautifully by Rachel Tardi, Stalag IIB is a personal and artistic triumph.

    Hardcover, 9-in. x 12-in., 192 pages, B&W.

    Cover price $29.99.

    Volume 2 - 1st printing.

Story and art by Jacques Tardi.

The conclusion to a Magnum Opus from one of our greatest contemporary cartoonists.

Picking up where Vol. 1 left off, the second volume of Stalag IIB begins when captured French soldier Ren. Tardi finally gets a taste of freedom, as prisoners and German officers alike are forced to evacuate the POW camp he has languished in for the past four years. Thus begins the long, grueling journey eastward, where Tardi and his fellow POWs must evade the pursuing Russian Army, stave off their gnawing hunger, and contend with the increasingly illtempered and vicious German soldiers accompanying them. Throughout this harrowing odyssey, the only thing that keeps him going is the hope that he'll one day return home to France, where his wife Henriette patiently awaits him.

Featuring meticulous line work punctuated by stunning splashes of color, Jacques Tardi's grim yet heartening biographical portrait of his father's life as a soldier during WWII is a personal and artistic triumph.

    Hardcover, 9-in. x 12-in., 192 pages, B&W.

    Cover price $29.99.

Ice Dragon HC (2014 Tor Books Illustrated Novel) By George R. R. Martin 1-1ST

    1st printing.

Written by George R. R. Martin. Art and cover by Luis Royo.

A tale of courage and sacrifice set in the world of the bestselling series A Song of Ice and Fire, basis for HBO's megahit Game of Thrones.

The ice dragon was a creature of legend and fear, for no man had ever tamed one. When it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate cold and frozen land. But Adara was not afraid, for Adara was a winter child, born during the worst freeze that anyone could remember. She could not remember the first time she had seen the ice dragon. It seemed that it had always been in her life. In her fourth year she touched it, in her fifth year she rode upon its broad back for the first time.

Then, in her seventh year, on a calm summer day, fiery dragons from the North swooped down upon the peaceful farm that was Adara's home. And only a winter child - and the ice dragon who loved her - could save her world from utter destruction.

Written by Corey Maison. Art by Ahmara Smith.

Corey Maison was born a girl, trapped in a boy's body. Growing up, Corey was more interested in dolls than trucks; in dresses than jeans. Everything about Corey was female... except her physicality. Known as gender dysphoria, this condition is devastating if not acknowledged. But society is slow to be sympathetic to the idea that a person's gender is not entirely based on physiology, but instead is fluid, and a combination of emotional and psychological self-awareness along with, or sometimes more importantly, physical characteristics. With unconditional love and support from her mother, Corey successfully starts the transition process with hopes of being comfortable in her own skin, being accepted by others, and raising awareness of young people who wish to transition.

Imagine Wanting Only This HC (2017 Pantheon Books) 1-1ST

    1st printing.

Story and art by Kristen Radtke.

A gorgeous graphic memoir about loss, love, and confronting grief.

When Kristen Radtke was in college, the sudden death of a beloved uncle and the sight of an abandoned mining town after his funeral marked the beginning moments of a lifelong fascination with ruins and with people and places left behind. Over time, this fascination deepened until it triggered a journey around the world in search of ruined places. She leads us through deserted cities in the American Midwest, an Icelandic town buried in volcanic ash, islands in the Philippines, New York City, and the delicate passageways of the human heart. Along the way, we learn about her family and a rare genetic heart disease that has been passed down through generations, and revisit tragic events in America's past.

In the Shadow of No Towers HC (2004 Pantheon) 1-1ST

1st printing. Art Spiegelman defined the graphic novel memoir with his Pulitzer Prize-winning MAUS, which narrated his father's experiences in Auschwitz. Growing up with Holocaust survivor parents, he was taught that no place is truly safe. Spiegelman finally experienced that truth for himself on 9/11, as he and his wife raced to find their daughter, attending her first day of school two blocks away from the World Trade Center. The fragmented nature of the art and text reflect the scattered, painfully vivid thoughts that Spiegelman had both during and after those traumatic moments. The oversized, full-color spreads include panels drawn realistically, drawn MAUS-style (i.e., Spiegelman depicts himself as a mouse), and drawn in the style of early 20th century comics such as the Katzenjammer Kids and Bringing up Father. Those early comics were a comfort to Spiegelman during the terror and paranoia he felt (and still feels) post-9/11, and the book closes with a short history and reprints of those comics, which seem startlingly relevant to the current political situation. Hardcover, 10-in. x 14 1/2-in., 40 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $19.95.
