The Mark of the Metazoid," script by Arnold Drake, pencils by Don Heck, inks by John Tartaglione; Aboard the Kree vessel over the Earth, Mar-Vell is put on trial by Yon-Rogg for being "Un-Kree" by allowing the Sub-Mariner to win a battle and prevent the people of Earth from being infected with bacteria (as seen last issue); However, after much consideration, Ronan decides to judge Mar-Vell based on his future actions in being able to carry out his mission; He orders Mar-Vell to kill Mr. Logan the one man who may hint at Mar-Vell's identity; Mar-Vell gets out of killing Logan by suggesting that killing Logan would attract unwanted attention and erasing his memory would be better; Ronan agrees and allows Mar-Vell to see things his own way; Back on Earth, Communist agents are plotting to capture Walter Lawson by sending their latest super-powered agent the Metazoid--a being mutated to have the metabolism of 50 men--to capture Lawson. "In the Path of Solam!", script by Arnold Drake, pencils by Don Heck, inks by John Tartaglione; While aboard the Kree ship, Mar-Vell is in a holographic training session which is cranked up to a high level by Yon-Rogg, hoping that Mar-Vell will die during the experience; However, Mar-Vell succeeds in beating the computer; After, Mar-Vell is ordered back to Earth, where his identity is almost exposed by Carol Danvers when she spots the Kree ship returning to Earth's orbit and "Lawson's" sudden appearance in the middle of the road; Later, in his guise of Lawson, Mar-Vell meets with Dr. Norman Lundquist who is displaying his Solar Amplification Light-Cannon; Examining the device, Mar-Vell realizes that the device has the potential of creating a solar energy creature (which Mar-Vell dubs "Solam"); However, when Mar-Vell decides to try and destroy the device, Yon-Rogg strikes Mar-Vell through his wrist communicator; When the device creates a Solam creature, it goes on a rampage and gets strong as it absorbs more solar energy; Changing into Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell pools the resources of the world's most powerful computers together to come up with a solution as to how to destroy Solam. Ronan accepts this testimony and allows Mar-Vell to return to Earth; However, he is sent on a mission to unleash a virus on a human town as a show of his loyalty; Yon-Rogg attempts to kill Carol Danvers with Kree weapons--however, as anticipated by Yon-Rogg--Mar-Vell comes to Carol's rescue, and Yon-Rogg uses the moment to fuel the seeds of jealousy in Una's mind; Mar-Vell agrees to help Carol investigate "Walter Lawson"; He uses the finger prints she gives him to make his match the ones Carol has on file, cementing his cover as Lawson. "And Fear Shall Follow!", script by Arnold Drake, pencils by Don Heck, inks by Vince Colletta; When a trading vessel piloted by members of the Aakon race, they detect a Kree vessel in proximity to the planet Earth; As age old enemies of the Kree, the Aakon decide to land on the dark side of the moon to avoid detection; However, their effort proves too late and Yon-Rogg orders his men to attack the Aakon, in spite of Mar-Vell's warnings that it wouldn't be a good idea; During the battle on the Moon, Yon-Rogg is injured in combat, and Mar-Vell is forced to kill the Aakon leader in order to save his superior, and both parties flee the scene of the battle; Mar-Vell assumes temporary control of the Kree vessel while Yon-Rogg is injured, however he soon returns to Earth; On Earth, Mar-Vell decides to investigate the home of the late Walter Lawson to turn up clues about the man's past, partially for Carol Danvers, and partially for his own curiosity. When he finds a secret lab where something big and humanoid is being constructed, Mar-Vell is attacked by members of the Organization, who had commissioned Lawson to build a robot to be their perfect assassin for them. 36 pgs., full color. "Between Hammer and Anvil!", script by Arnold Drake, pencils by Don Heck, inks by Vince Colletta; While out in his Captain Marvel guise, Mar-Vell is attacked by an Aakon attack party; After a brief battle with the Aakon, Mar-Vell manages to escape; Meanwhile, at the hotel where Mar-Vell stays as "Walter Lawson", Carol Danvers convinces Mr. Logan to admit her into "Lawson's" room. However, before she can find anything of value, the repaired Cyberex appears and takes Carol hostage, taking her back to Lawson's lab; When Mar-Vell arrives as "Lawson" he learns about Carol's kidnap and goes after Cyberex and tracks the robot back to Lawson's lab; There Mar-Vell has his hands full when the Aakon attack party also arrives; However, when Mar-Vell realizes that the Cyberex is attracted to Lawson's scent on his note book, Mar-Vell writes a Kree code number on the cover of the book, and leaves it for the Aakon to get a hold of; When the Aakon think it's a coded Kree plan, they become targets of Cyberex who kills them to get a hold of the source of Lawson's scent; Mar-Vell then manages to destroy Cyberex once and for all with his Uni-Beam to smash open the robot's housing and break its repair mechanism. 36 pgs., full color. "When a Galaxy Beckons," script by Gary Friedrich, pencils by Frank Springer, inks by Vince Colletta; Held at gun point at the Cape for treason charges, Mar-Vel trys to figure out what to do while Carol tries to appear for Mar-Vell's release; While at the same time the Puppet Master--from his island hideout--uses one of his special puppets to take control of Iron Man, part of a plan to aid Egghead against the Avengers (See Avengers #64); Iron Man, in his civilian guise as Tony Stark is on his way to business in Miami, is controlled by the Puppet Master to change into Iron Man and leaves the plane to attack Mar-Vell; The Puppet Master manages to have Iron Man attack Mar-Vell, however the battle ends when unexpectedly when Stark's heart condition causes Stark to have a heart attack; A furious Puppet Master, not knowing why Iron Man no longer response to his command, throws his puppet at the controls causing an explosion that buries the Puppet Master under his machinery. 36 pgs., full color. First appearance of the new Captain Marvel in "Behind The Mask Of Zo!", script by Archie Goodwin, pencils by Don Heck, inks by Syd Shores; Taken prisoner by the followers of Tam-Bor, Mar-Vell burst free and attempts to destroy the magnetic device which threatens the universe; When Ronan the Accuser tries to stop Mar-Vell, however Ronan fails and Mar-Vell succeeds in destroying the magnetic device inside Tam-Bor; Before Ronan can kill Mar-Vell in combat, the Supreme Sentry arrives and banishes Ronan. While on Earth, Carol Danvers awakens in a hospital and flees FBI agents come to question her about Walter Lawson The Supreme Sentry then transports Mar-Vell to the planet Hala and brings him before the Supreme Intelligence; The Surpeme Intelligence tells Mar-Vell that he was being manipulated, and that Zo was really Zarek who was working with the Ronan the Accuser to try use Mar-Vell as a tool to overthrow the Kree empire and take over for themselves; When Zarek tries to kill the Supreme Intelligence with a Negatron Sphere, Mar-Vell shields the blast with his body and miraculously survives. 36 pgs., full color. First full appearance of the new Captain Marvel in "And a Child Shall Lead You!", script by Roy Thomas, pencils by Gil Kane, inks by Dan Adkins; Trapped in the Negative Zone, Mar-Vell is told by the Supreme Intelligence that he is trapped in this realm due to his blind quest for revenge against Yon-Rogg; However, he offers Mar-Vell a way to potentially free himself and directs his mind towards Earth and to the plight of young Rick Jones, who had just been rejected by his partner Captain America; (Unknown to Rick, Cap had forcefully switched bodies with the Red Skull.); He follows Rick as he returned to Avengers Mansion one last time to collect his things and start hitting the road again; When Jones gets close to an ancient Kree station which contains the Nega Bands, Mar-Vell conjures up an image of Captain America to lure Rick Jones to the bands; There Mar-Vell contacts Jones and explains his plight and that the Bands would allow them to temporarily switch places; Given the opportunity to become a super-hero, Rick accepts and puts on the Nega Bands; Clashing them together he and Mar-Vell change places. Instead, they put their minds together in an extension of their newfound ability to switch through will alone and ultimately free themselves from each other as well as the field; Their feat is witnessed from the shadows by a young Watcher named Aron as well as a jungle predator called a Rackcat; The Rackcat attacks as soon as Mar-Vell and Rick separate, forcing Mar-Vell to fend it off before they can search for the trial; The Rackcat pursues them persistently and Aron continues to observe out of fascination. They start to suffocate in the asteroid's poisonous atmosphere, but are helped by a nearby thyamite prospector named Shabby Allus, who gives them helmets to breathe. Seeing the star on Captain Marvel's costume, Allus assumes he's the Marshall he sent for, though Mar-Vell protests that his name isn't "Mar-Shall". Rick, using his Nega-Band, acts on an idea he had and transmutes the matter of his clothes into a red and blue costume more appropriate for the setting, joking that he might call himself "Marvel Boy". "Death Throws!", script by Steve Englehart (plot; script) and Al Milgrom (plot), art by Al Milgrom; Captain Marvel draws extra strength from his Nega-Band to aid him against the Destroyer, but their battle ends due to the intervention of Fawn; She touches Drax, which implants knowledge in his mind of Rick's peril and, of more concern to him, the continued existence of Thanos, whom he immediately departs to hunt down; Fawn also touches Mar-Vell to alert him to Rick's situation, though he continues to be the only one that can't see her; Mar-Vell quickly finds a dying, comatose Rick and does all he can to stabilize him with the remaining shared energy of the Nega-Bands, but knows his only hope is to get them to Deneb IV; As he tries to help Rick, he finds it increasingly difficult to focus and his internal monologue becomes less sophisticated; He finds Rusty the robot mule mysteriously back in working condition (the Supreme Intelligence having restored it during the battle because he wanted them to hurry along to the planet), so they are able to jump to Debeb IV only to find it devastated, and just before Rusty breaks down again. 36 pgs., full color.
