Direct Edition. "The War Begins!" Part 1 of 12. Story by Jim Shooter. Art by Mike Zeck and John Beatty. This is it, the granddaddy of all epic events. Before Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, House of M, Civil War, and Infinity Gauntlet there was Secret Wars. A nigh omnipotent being from beyond has, for lack of a better word, kidnapped the greatest heroes and deadliest villains in the Marvel Universe and whisked them to the far side of the universe to battle for the ultimate prize. One thing is for certain, the lives of these heroes and villains will never be the same again. - This is the first printing. Any 2nd printing will have the words "Second Printing" at the bottom of the first page. NOTE: Nearly all first printings contain a "Blue Galactus" from a printing error (a lack of magenta printing plates) that was corrected in later printings. While small number of First printings may have the correct colors, the majority of copies will have "Blue Galactus". Due to the frequency, "Blue Galactus" variants should be treated the same as other First Printings. 36 pages, full color. Cover price $0.75.

1st printing - In Batman Sword of Azrael (1992) #1-4, a major new hero was introduced to the Batman mythos. Now, another character is added to the Batman family. Only this time, it's a villain. Bane is the sole survivor of the Venom experiments (first revealed in Batman Legends of the Dark Knight (1989-2007) #16-20), an attempt to create drug-enhanced killing machines. As a result of these tests, Bane has spent a lifetime as the toughest inmate in the worst prison on the South American island of Santa Prisca where he acquired his berserk strength, a savage, calculating intellect, and an unparalleled megalomania. He ultimately sets his sights on Gotham City, and goes gunning for the Dark Knight. Written by Chuck Dixon, with art by Graham Nolan and Eduardo Barreto. Painted cover by Glenn Fabry. 68 pages. Cover price $2.50.

Controversial parody discontinued due to Disney lawsuit. The Air Pirates were a group of cartoonists who created two issues of an underground comic called Air Pirates Funnies in 1971, leading to a famous lawsuit by The Walt Disney Company. Founded by Dan O'Neill, the group also included Shary Flenniken, Bobby London, Gary Hallgren, and Ted Richards. The collective shared a common interest in the styles of past masters of the comic strip: Flenniken emulated George McManus's Bringing Up Father in her Trots and Bonnie comics, London's strip Dirty Duck paid homage to the styles of E.C. Segar's Thimble Theater and George Herriman's Krazy Kat, and Richards' Dopin' Dan was similar to Mort Walker's Beetle Bailey. The original Air Pirates were a gang of Mickey Mouse antagonists of the 1930s; O'Neill regarded Mickey Mouse as a symbol of conformist hypocrisy in American culture, and therefore a ripe target for satire. The first issue of Air Pirates Funnies was dated July 1971, and the second issue dated August. Both were published under the Hell Comics imprint, and were distributed through Ron Turner's Last Gasp publishing company. The lead stories in both issues, created by O'Neill and Hallgren, focused on Walt Disney characters, most notably from Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse newspaper strip, with the Disney characters engaging in adult behaviors such as sex and drug consumption. O'Neill insisted it would dilute the parody to change the names of the characters, so his adventurous mouse character was called "Mickey" Cover price $0.50.
