Written by Jose-Luis Bocquet. Art and cover by Catel Muller.
In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922.
Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company.
Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history.

1st printing. Collects American Splendor: Unsung Hero (2002) #1-3. Written by Harvey Pekar. Art by David Collier. Few authors are able to capture an honest snapshot of everyday life the way Harvey Pekar can. From ruminations on jazz musicians to back problems and traffic tickets, Pekar writes in a clear, unsentimental voice that not only explores the mundane, but celebrates it as well. This time out, Pekar focuses his sharp literary eye on Robert McNeill, an ordinary man who's lived an extraordinary life. McNeill recounts his time spent as a G.I. in Vietnam, on a tour through that surreal and horrific landscape that even now, thirty years later, we're struggling to define. Unsung Hero is a tale of cynicism and endurance, tempered by McNeill's distinct sense of humor and Pekar's touching wit. American Splendor: Unsung Hero is the first Dark Horse collection from the long-running comic-book series that inspired the upcoming American Splendor feature film! The film version of American Splendor won the prestigious Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival and has earned both critical and popular acclaim! Softcover, 80 pages, full color. Cover price $11.95.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. Written by Jaime Castle and Rhett C. Bruno. Art and Cover by Katerina Solomko. A new World. An ancient Power. A chance to be a Hero. Danny Kendrick was a down-on-his luck performer who always struggled to find his place. He certainly never wanted to be a hero. He just hoped to earn a living doing what he loved. That all changes when he pisses off the wrong guy and gets sucked into a fantasy realm straight out of a Renaissance Fair. Getting used to a new world is tough. Its even tougher when youre surrounded by axe-wielding barbarians, super hot elf assassins, strange magic, and a System AI that seems as interested in causing trouble as helping... or maybe just wasn't interested in being assigned yet another companion in the first place. Danny must adapt fast, turn on the charm, and learn to embrace his given Class if he hopes to master it and survive this dangerous new place. But he has a knack for finding trouble. Gifted what seems like an innocent ancient lute after making a questionable deal with a Hag, Danny becomes the target of mysterious factions who seek to claim its power. It's up to him, Screenie, and his new barbaric friend, Curr, to uncover the truth and become the heroes nobody knew they needed. And maybe, just maybe, Danny will finally find a place where he belongs. Perhaps, even where he'll thrive. Softcover, 5 1/2-in. x 8-in., 256 pages, Text (with B&W Chapter Illustrations). 1st printing. Written by Heather Lang and Jamie Harper. Art and cover by Jamie Harper. Theres strength in numbers out there in the wild! In a lively comics-style format, the creators of Supermoms! and Superdads! deliver a funny, fascinating look at some ingenious ways that animal squads survive. Did you know that when honeybees find a food source, they do a dance to convey the direction, distance, and yumminess level to their hive mates? Or that chickadees add extra dees to their calls to warn their flock of danger? Or that a meerkat standing like a sentry may well be guarding its mob while they eat? Sometimes the key is divvying up tasks, like when beavers build a dam, or its combining differences—like when a sea anemone protects a hermit crab with its stinging tentacles, then gets a ride and some tasty tidbits from the crab. Or its power in numbers, as when hundreds of thousands of starlings fly in a murmuration, foiling predators trying to lock in on a target. With fun, fact-filled panels, Heather Lang and Jamie Harper delve into the ways animals band together to stay safe and thrive, from orcas to ostriches, spiny lobsters to snow monkeys, leaf cutter ants to zebras and more. Aspiring naturalists can find out more about the animals in the back matter, along with an array of resources for continuing to explore. Hardcover, 11 1/2-in. x 10 1/4-in., 40 pages, full color. Piper Pájaro and Sloane MacBrute are two 13-year-old girls with very different lives but very similar secrets. Popular, outgoing Piper is strong-like, ripping-the-doors-off-cars strong. She longs to be a superhero, even if she tends to leave massive messes in her wake. Sloane, on the other hand, is snarky and super-smart. Like, evil-genius smart. To help her family, she has to put those smarts to use for her villainous grandfather.
When a mission to steal an experimental technological device brings the two girls face to face with each other, the device sparks-and the two girls switch bodies! Now they must live in each other's shoes as they figure out a way to switch back. Anti/Hero is a story that explores what makes a hero, how one can find friendship where it's unexpected, and what it means to walk in another person's shoes...literally!
Authors Kate Karyus Quinn (Another Little Piece, The Show Must Go On) and Demitria Lunetta (The Fade, Bad Blood) make their graphic novel debut alongside artist Maca Gil and introduce two new and exciting DC characters!

Reluctant muse and feminist champion-heiress, rebel, refugee-and perhaps the last of the great surrealist artists, Leonora Carrington played many roles in her long and extraordinary life. But the demons that have both haunted and inspired her work are gathering, and when the world goes mad with the outbreak of war and the Nazi invasion, Leonora's own hold on reality collapses into a terrifying psychotic episode of her own. The dazzling, provocative work of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) would come to define the vibrant New York art scene of the late '70s and early '80s. Punk, jazz, graffiti, hip-hop: his work drew heavily on the cultural trappings of lower Manhattan. Today, Basquiat's influence can be seen not only in fine art but in fashion, design, and music. This stunning graphic novel captures the dramatic life and exhilarating times of this archetypal New York artist, covering everything from the SAMO graffiti project to his first solo show, from his relationship with Andy Warhol to the substance abuse that would cost him his life. This playful, authoritative biography shows Basquiat's work to be more important, his themes more urgent, than ever before.

Story and art by Fabrizio Dori.
In 1891, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) arrives on the French Polynesian island of Tahiti. In this lush paradise, he is liberated from the concerns of the city-dwelling European. He is free: to love, to sing, and to create. In Copenhagen, Gauguin's wife enjoys no such freedom. She would rather forget her odious husband and his degenerate artwork. Instead, in a city resistant to the avant-garde, she is tasked with selling a collection of his extravagantly priced Tahitian paintings. Gauguin: The Other World is a revelatory biography of an artist whose qualities as a man won him few admirers in his own lifetime, but whose talents as a painter would have an enormous influence on the art of Picasso, Matisse, and many more.

Written by Vincent Zabus. Art and cover by Thomas Campi.
Intoxicated by the promise of a promotion, Charles Singular for once allows himself a small extravagance: he buys a bowler hat. But there's a problem: this is no ordinary hat. This one once belonged to the surrealist painter René Magritte, and by donning it Charles has unwittingly stepped into the artist's off-kilter world. What's more, he can't escape. At least, not until he has illuminated the secrets behind Magritte's work. What follows is a hallucinatory journey through Magritte's imaginative landscape, a place where facial features mutate, the crescent moon appears in unexpected places, and answers prove frustratingly elusive.

1st printing. Story and art by Steffen Kverneland. In Munch, writer and artist Steffen Kverneland brings the story of one of the world's most influential painters to vivid life. This extraordinary, inventive graphic novel uses text drawn exclusively from the quotes of Edvard Munch and his contemporaries. Filled with authenticity and life, Munch debunks the familiar myth of the half-mad expressionist painter - anguished, starving, and ill-treated - and draws out his neglected sense of humor and optimism. Born out of a lifelong fascination with Munch's life and work, this is a landmark of graphic biography and the funniest, most entertaining portrait yet of a complex man and the pioneering artist behind The Scream. Softcover, 8-in. x 10-in., 344 pages, full color. Cover price $27.50.

Story and art by Typex.
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is a towering figure in European art history: a virtuoso painter, draftsman, and etcher whose enduring influence can be seen in the work of artists from J. M. W. Turner to Francis Bacon and beyond. A prolific self-portraitist, Rembrandt is a deeply familiar figure, yet little is known of his life and character. In this first graphic biography of the Dutch master, Typex pieces together the facts that are known about Rembrandt's life to weave a captivating story about a miller's son who, after a brief spell of fame, suffered the fate of so many artists: financial ruin.
It is a story about life and death, love and bereavement, success and loss.
Softcover, 240 pages, full color.
