1st printing. Story and art by Anders Nilsen. A haunting postmodern fable, Big Questions is the magnum opus of Anders Nilsen, one of the brightest and most talented young cartoonists working today. This beautiful minimalist story details the metaphysical quandaries of the occupants of an endless plain, existing somewhere between a dream and a Russian steppe. A downed plane is thought to be a bird and the unexploded bomb that came from it is mistaken for a giant egg by the group of birds whose lives the story follows. The indifferent, stranded pilot is of great interest to the birds-some doggedly seek his approval, while others do quite the opposite, leading to tensions in the group. Cover price $44.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Pascal Girard. Jimmy is a teenager in a crummy little town. He's got a lousy best friend, a porn habit, and an uncle whose miserable existence is the embodiment of life stalled in its tracks. He's also got a tender soul, a pure-hearted crush, and the makings of a budding artist. Story and art by Michael DeForge.

Long after the demise of humankind, birds roam freely around a new earth complete with fruitful trees, sophisticated fungal networks, and an enviable socialist order. The universal worm feeds all, there are no weekends, and economics is as fantastical a study as unicorn psychology.

1st printing. Story and art by Eagle Valiant Brosi. A heartfelt, comedic coming-of-age debut from a bright new talent. When we meet Eagle Valiant Brosi in Black Cohosh, he is a long-haired commune kid, bullied by other kids, teachers, and his neighbors. And because of his speech impediment, Eagle observes silently and often. Mom-a classic earthy, free spirit prone to discursive lectures on natural medicine and the efficacy of certain plants-is the only one who really cares. So Eagle lets others talk and talk and talk, revealing their true natures and selfish (sometimes even selfless) motivations. Softcover, 6-in. x 9-in., 360 pages, B&W. Cover price $24.95.

2nd Edition - 1st printing. Story and art by Craig Thompson. The graphic novel classic, available for the first time in a new Drawn & Quarterly edition! Blankets is the story of a young man coming of age and finding the confidence to express his creative voice. Craig Thompson's poignant graphic memoir plays out against the backdrop of a Midwestern winterscape: finely-hewn linework draws together a portrait of small town life, a rigorously fundamentalist Christian childhood, and a lonely, emotionally mixed-up adolescence. Under an engulfing blanket of snow, Craig and Raina fall in love at winter church camp, revealing to one another their struggles with faith and their dreams of escape. This groundbreaking graphic novel, winner of two Eisner and three Harvey Awards, is an eloquent portrait of adolescent yearning; first love (and first heartache); faith in crisis; and the process of moving beyond all of that. 1st printing. Story and art by Jillian Tamaki. Jenny becomes obsessed with a strange "mirror Facebook," which presents an alternate, possibly better, version of herself. Helen finds her clothes growing baggy, her shoes looser, and as she shrinks away to nothingness, the world around her recedes as well. The animals of the city briefly open their minds to us, and we see the world as they do. A mysterious music file surfaces on the internet and forms the basis of a utopian society - or is it a cult? Boundless is at once fantastical and realist, playfully hinting at possible transcendence: from one's culture, one's relationship, oneself. This collection of short stories is a showcase for the masterful blend of emotion and humour of award-winning cartoonist Jillian Tamaki. Softcover, 248 pages, full color. Cover price $24.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Gilbert Hernandez. Love and Rockets cartoonist Gilbert Hernandez returns with Bumperhead, a companion book to Marble Season. Gilbert's new book follows Bobby, a young slacker who narrates his life as it happens but offers very little reflection on the events that transpire. Bobby lives in the moment exclusively, and is incapable of seeing the world outside of his experiences. He comes of age in the 1970s, making a rapid progression through that era's different subcultures; in a short period of time he segues from a stoner glam-rocker to a drunk rocker to a speed-freak punk. He drifts in and out of relationships with friends, both male and female. Life zooms past him. Hernandez's approach captures the numbness and raw undirected anger and passion of a young man; a young man who waits for life to happen to him, not noticing all the while that it's happening. Hardcover, 8-in. x 11-in., 128 pages, B&W. Cover price $21.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Ben Katchor. Cheap Novelties is an early testament to Ben Katchor's extraordinary prescience as both a gifted cartoonist and an astute urban character. Rumpled, middle-aged, Julius Knipl photographs a vanishing city, an urban landscape of low-rent apartment buildings, obsolete industries, monuments to forgotten people and events, and countless sources of inexpensive food. Now presented as a deluxe anniversary edition, Cheap Novelties is a portrait of what we have lost to gentrification, globalization, and the malling of America that is as moving today as it was a quarter century ago. An aspiring cartoonist and book lovin' lesbian, Louise works a dead-end day job at a shoe store, where she spends most of her time brooding over a coworker who will never quite love her back. When Louise unexpectedly lands a new job at a private library on the Upper East Side, she feels like her graphic novel will finally take off - surely the oldest library in New York has excellent holdings on pigeons and WWI. As night falls in the City of Belgium, three strangers in their late twenties - a most dangerous age - arrive at a popular restaurant.

Jona is about to move away; he calls his wife, who's already settled in Berlin, before trying to make plans with friends for one last night on the town. No one bites-they're all busy or maybe they just don't want to party-but he's determined to make this night something to remember. Victoria is lively and energetic, but surrounded by friends and family who are buzzkills, always worrying about what is best for her. Rodolphe glumly considers his own misery and then suddenly snaps out of it, becoming the life of the party.

Story and art by R. Sikoryak.

    R. Sikoryak, the master of the pop culture pastiche, visually interprets the complete text of the supreme law of the land with more than a century of American pop culture icons. Sikoryak distills the very essence of the government legalese from the abstract to the tangible, the historical to the contemporary.

Among Sikoryak's spot-on unions of government articles and amendments with famous comic book characters: the eighteenth amendment that instituted prohibition is articulated with Homer Simpson running from Chief Wiggum; the fourteenth amendment that solidifies citizenship to all people born and naturalized in the USA is personified by Ms. Marvel; and, of course, the nineteenth amendment offering women the right to vote is a glorious depiction of Wonder Woman breaking free from her chains.

A cartoonists acclaimed take on the superhero genre—now in paperback.

Teen outcast Andy is an orphaned nobody with only one friend, the obnoxious—but loyal—Louie. They roam school halls and city streets, invisible to everyone but bullies and tormentors, until the glorious day when Andy takes his first puff on a cigarette. That night he wakes, heart pounding, soaked in sweat, and finds himself suddenly overcome with the peculiar notion that he can do anything. Indeed, he can, and as he learns the extent of his new powers, he discovers a terrible and seductive gadget—a hideous compliment to his seething rage—that forever changes everything.

The Death-Ray utilizes the classic staples of the superhero genre—origin, costume, ray gun, sidekick, fight scene—and reconfigures them in a story that is anything but morally simplistic. With subtle comedy, deft mastery, and an obvious affection for the bold pop-art exuberance of comic book design, Daniel Clowes delivers a contemporary meditation on the darkness of the human psyche.

One of Clowess most beloved books, The Death-Ray is the winner of the Eisner, Harvey, and Ignatz Awards.

1st printing. By Denys Wortman. Edited by James Sturm and Brandon Elston. A rescued archive of vintage New York from a forgotten master! After cartoonist, educator and editor James Sturm discovered the vintage book, Mopey Dick and the Duke, he set off to find more about the author, the deceased and unknown cartoonist Denys Wortman. Sturm immediately took note of the masterful drawings - casual, confident, and brimming with personality - and wondered how this cartoonist escaped his radar. After some online sleuthing, Sturm connected with Wortman's son, Denys Wortman VIII, who relayed that an archive of over 5,000 illustrations was literally sitting in his shed in dire need of rescuing. For over 35 years, the illustrations had been fighting such elements as hungry rodents, rusty paperclips and even a blizzard. Wortman VIIII also had drawers full of his father's correspondences including letters and holiday cards from William Steig and Walt Disney. Original artwork by artists and personal friends including Peggy Bacon, Milt Gross, Isabel Bishop, and Reginald Marsh were also saved. Considering that Wortman's luminary peers held him in the highest regard coupled with his artistic prowess, makes his absence from both fine art and comics history puzzling. So, Sturm and Brandon Elston set out to create a beautiful tribute to the forgotten master. Denys Wortman's New York is not only a tribute to Wortman, but it is a tribute to New York, the city that sparked Wortman's voracious creative output. From coal cellars to rooftops; from opera houses to boarding houses; Wortman recorded the sailors, dish-washers, con artists, entertainers, pushcart peddlers, construction workers, musicians, hobos, society matrons, young mothers, secretaries, and students who collectively make New York the city it is. Softcover, 8-in. x 11-in., 288 pages, B&W. Cover price $29.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Mimi Pond. Mimi Pond crafts a gorgeous, dazzling biography of the Mitford Sisters. In DO ADMIT: THE MITFORD SISTERS AND ME, they grow from cloistered turn-of-the-century country girls into debutantes who would marry into political influence—for better or worse. Is it any wonder that a young, working class Mimi in Southern California becomes enamored with The Mitfords downright fanciful rich-and-famous lifestyle? This charming, inventively cartooned, and lovingly researched biography captures the dramatic, over-the-top antics of high societys strongest personalities as they rubbed elbows with some of historys most infamous fascists and communists. Ponds genius for classic cartooning brings the aesthetic decadence of the 1920s and 30s to life with effortless aplomb, warts and all. Hardcover, 7-in. x 9-in., 444 pages, B&W (and Blue). But with her partner in mourning-and in desperate need of a boost in morale-she gives in to his humble request. And in the grand tradition of reluctant pet owners, she and their puppy soon become inseparable. The young couple even goes so far as to relocate to soothe their new canine pal's anxiety. After all, there's nothing like a move to the country to set yourself right. Right? The idyll of a quiet life soon gives way to a surprising degree of antagonism, including clashes with long-time local residents of a different generation. The culture shock is palpable for all three urban transplants as the isolation of their new environs starts to sink in. They eventually adopt another dog, and still another-all while reckoning with the ups and downs of middle-age and childlessness in an unforgivingly traditional milieu.
