Volume 1 - 1st printing. Story and art by Sanpei Shirato. At long last, manga titan Shirato Sanpei's groundbreaking epic makes its way into English. Celebrated as a watershed of both the Japanese counterculture and dramatic, longform storytelling in manga, THE LEGEND OF KAMUIi serves up clashing swords and class struggle to create a timeless political allegory set in feudal Japan. It's the 17th century in Japan. Child outcast Kamui lives on the fringes of a miserably stratified society. Fueled by pure grit, rage, and a dash of cunning, his only way out is to take up the mantle of ninja. Follow scrappy peasants, cold-blooded ninja, and disgraced and exalted warriors as they navigate the unforgiving hardships of a violent yet hopeful age. With its vivid and critical attention to social injustice and environmental issues against a backdrop of heart-pounding action and romance, this multilayered gekiga drama not only redefined ninja and samurai fantasy, it also offers astonishing parallels with the modern day. Softcover (with Cover Sash), 6-in. x 8-in., 612 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $39.99.

Volume 1 - 1st printing. "Working Girl!"
Story and art by John Stanley.
Lulu Moppet is an outspoken and brazen young girl who doesn't follow any rules-whether they've been set by her parents, the neighborhood boys, or society itself. 2019 D+Q begins a landmark reissue series of Lulu's suburban hijinks: she goes on picnics, babysits, and attempts to break into the boys' clubhouse again and again. Cartoonist John Stanley's expert timing and constant gags made these stories unbelievably enjoyable, ensuring that Marge's Little Lulu was a defining comic of the post-war period.
Lulu's assertiveness, individuality, and creativity is empowering to witness; the series is powerfully feminist despite the decades in which the stories were created.
Hardcover, 256 pages, full color.

1st printing. Story and art by Matthew Forsythe. NOTE: Story continued from Ojingogo GN (2008). Jinchalo is Korean for "Really?" and that question is at the heart of this book. A companion to Ojingogo, Jinchalo stars the same little girl as its heroine. When the mischevious shapeshifter Jinchalo hatches from a mysterious egg, he starts our heroine adventuring anew. Magical troubles drag the pair out of the safety of her home. These comics are firmly rooted in Korean folktakes and stylistic conventions, with a playful, joyous line to create a Miyazaki-tinged dreamscape where spotted octopi fly and bears give piggyback rides. 2nd Edition - 1st printing. By Chester Brown. Paying for It was the most talked-about and controversial graphic novel of 2011, a critical success so innovative and complex that it received two rave reviews in The New York Times. Chester Brown's eloquent, spare artwork stands out in this new paperback edition, tied to the release of the film adaptation co-written and directed by Sook-Yin Lee, Brown's longtime friend. Paying for It offers an entirely unvarnished exploration of sex work through Brown's own life story, showing him as a timid john who rides his bike to his escorts, wonders how to tip so as not to offend, and reads Dan Savage for advice. The book demystifies an experience that is so often sensationalized, revealing a world of online reviews, seemingly willing participants, and clean apartments devoid of clichéd street corners, drugs, or pimps. Now with an introduction by Lee, expanded notes discussing the film adaptation, movie stills and behind the scenes shots, as well as a new cover by Brown and artwork that he created for the production, Paying for It: The Film Edition is an unmissable edition for fans of Brown and film-making alike. Softcover, 5 1/2-in. x 7 1/2-in., 344 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $21.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Yoshihiro Tatsumi. The award-winning memoir translated by Taro Nettleton with a new design by Adrian Tomine. In this memoir that won two Eisner Awards, the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, a prize at the Festival de la BD d'Angoulême, legendary manga-ka Yoshihiro Tatsumi uses his lifelong obsession with comics as a framework to tell his life story incisively and unflinchingly. He deftly weaves a complex story that encompasses Japanese culture and history, family dynamics, first love, the intricacies of the manga industry, and most importantly, what it means to be an artist. Alternately humorous, enlightening, and haunting, A Drifting Life is the masterful summation of a fascinating life and a historic career. Over sixty years ago, Yoshihiro Tatsumi expanded the horizons of comics storytelling by using the visual language of manga to tell gritty, dark, literary stories about the private lives of everyday people, a genre he coined gekiga. A Drifting Life is Tatsumis most ambitious, personal, and heart-felt work and considered to be one of the defining autobiographical works of the comics medium. A new edition of Brian Ralph's cult classic zombie graphic novel, now a Netflix Original series!
Daybreak is seen through the eyes of a silent observer as he runs from the shadows of the imminent zombie threat. The post-apocalyptic backdrop features tangles of rocks, lumber, I beams, and overturned cars that are characters in and of themselves. Drawing inspiration from horror movies, television, and first-person shooter video games, Daybreak departs from zombie genre in both content and format, achieving a living-dead masterwork of literary proportions.

Why are there poodles pouring out of this wormhole? Don't Go Where I Can't Follow is an eloquent appreciation of the time the author shared with his fiancée, Cheryl Weaver. The story is told using artifacts of the couple's life together, including early love notes, simple and poetic postcards, tales of their travels in written and comics form, journal entries, and drawings done in the hospital in her final days.
Don't Go Where I Can't Follow is a deeply personal romance, and a universal reminder of our mortality and the significance of the relationships we build.

1st printing. Story and art by Julie Delporte. Julie Delporte's Everywhere Antennas is a deeply affecting, sparely constructed novel, equal parts Walden and The Bell Jar. In soft, flowing colored pencil, Delporte shows her narrator coming to term with a rare and misunderstood sensitivity to the radiation emitted by the televisions, cell phones, and computers that permeate urban life. Everywhere Antennas is the portrait of a woman caught in the margins, struggling to balance the demands of technology and modern life with the need to find meaningful relationships and work. With Everywhere Antennas, Julie Delporte proves herself to be a master craftswoman of heartbreakingly personal, beautifully literate graphic fiction. Softcover, 7-in. x 8-in., 112 pages, full color. Cover price $19.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Rutu Modan. In modern-day Tel Aviv, a young man, Koby Franco, receives an urgent phone call from a female soldier. Learning that his estranged father may have been a victim of a suicide bombing in Hadera, Koby reluctantly joins the soldier in searching for clues. His father's death would certainly explain the empty apartment and disconnected phone line. As Koby tries to unravel the mystery of his father's death, he finds himself not only piecing together the last few months of his father's life, but his entire identity. With thin, precise lines and luscious watercolors, Modan creates a portrait of modern Israel, a place where sudden death mingles with the slow dissolution of family ties. Exit Wounds is the North American graphic novel debut from one of Israel's best-known cartoonists, Rutu Modan. She has received several awards in Israel and abroad, including the 'Best Illustrated Children's Book' Award from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem (four times) and the 'Young Artist of the Year' by the Israel Ministry of Culture. She is a chosen artist of the Israel Cultural Excellence Foundation. Softcover, 168 pages, full color. NOTE: For more works by Rutu Modan see Jamilti and Other Stories HC (2008). Cover price $19.95.

Story and art by Leslie Stein.
I Know You Rider is Leslie Stein's rumination on the many complex questions surrounding the decision to reproduce.
Opening in an abortion clinic, the book accompanies Stein through a year of her life, steeped in emotions she was not quite expecting while also looking far beyond her own experiences. Instead of focusing on trauma, this is a story about unpredictability, change, and adaptability, adding a much-needed new perspective to a topic often avoided or discussed through a black-and-white lens.

1st printing. Story and art by Maria Medem. Antonia is the sole inhabitant of a deserted town, with only a roaming pack of dogs and her own worn out memories to keep her company. Nothing is new in this world, the ponds are so still they are dead, and her recollections feel more vivid than her surroundings. At times, the isolation is unbearable. Until she meets her flower. Her flower gives her purpose: a reason to get up each morning, to ring the bells of the town, to wake up the fields, and to feel alive. And yet a relentless thought eats away at her-what will happen once her flower dies? Her quest to save the flower begins alongside a charming traveler from the land of mirrors. The pair embark on a journey filled with music, swimming holes, and folk tales whispered late into the starry night. They march through the fields to the beat of turtledove calls, occasionally stopping to get drunk off the fruits of the strawberry tree. Slowly Antonia opens up to the world beyond her town, to the people who inhabit it-and to the endless possibilities of community and friendship. Softcover, 332 pages, full color. Cover price $29.99.

1st printing. Story and art by Gabrielle Bell. Gabrielle Bell fascinatingly documents the mundane details of her below-minimum-wage, twentysomething existence in Brooklyn, New York, with a subtle humor. Bell tackles a string of forgettable, unrelated jobs-including nude modeling, artist's assistant, art teacher, and jewelry maker - that only serve to bolster her despair, boredom, and discomfort in her own skin. Bell's self-scrutiny leads her to dream sequences that allow her to rise above her banal actuality and hyperawareness. Bell's daily comics allow her to escape the harsh, judgmental gaze of the world and the monotony of daily life. Her unpolished art speaks to a desire to record all the messy details while the pain and confusion are still fresh. Hardcover, 112 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $19.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Sylvie Rancourt. In 1980, Sylvie Rancourt and her boyfriend moved to Montreal from rural Northern Quebec. With limited formal education or training, they had a hard time finding employment, so Sylvie began dancing in strip clubs. These experiences formed the backbone of the first Canadian autobiographical comic book, Melody, which Rancourt wrote, drew, and distributed. Later, Rancourt collaborated with artist Jacques Boivin, who translated and drew a new series of Melody comics for the American market. The Rancourt drawn-and-written comics have never before seen English publication. These stories are compelling without ever being voyeuristic or self-pitying, and her drawings are formally innovative while maintaining a refreshingly frank and engaging clarity. Rancourt shares a world that, in someone else's writing, might be scandalous or seedy, but in hers is fully realized, real, and often funny. Softcover, 6-in. x 7 1/2-in., 352 pages, B&W. Mature Readers Cover price $22.95.

1st printing. Story and art by Michael D. Kennedy. "Have I settled down yet?" The question rings eternal across all ten stories in this highly anticipated debut collection of comics fiction by New Yorker and New York Times contributor Michael D. Kennedy. A series of individuals leave the West Indies and attempt to find their footing in the damp dinge of England's counties. A child on his daily trike ride is stalked by a sinister, shape-shifting ligahoo. A blues singer's wife hallucinates untoward revelations in the grips of high yellow fever when she inhales spores from psychedelic mushrooms growing unchecked in their apartment. A man dwells on his absent father, paints the man into a duppy myth, and bears the consequences of this fantastical undertaking. Inspired by the folk tales and oral traditions of his Caribbean roots, Milk White Steed is a dreamlike venture into the messy truths of everyday West Indian lives. Softcover, 5-in. x 8 1/2-in., 284 pages, PC/PB&W. Cover price $24.95.
