1st printing. Edited by Richard J. Gray II and Betty Kaklamanidou. Superhero films are one of the most enduring genres of cinema, and their popularity is only increasing in the 21st century. These ten critical essays explore the phenomenon through the lenses of numerous academic disciplines, and cover topics such as the role of globalization in the formation of superhero narratives, the shifting nature of masculinity and femininity in the superhero world and the state of the genre today. Of particular interest is the way these narratives, however fantastic, abstract, futuristic or simplistic, resonate with specific events in the world and function as starting points for discussion of contemporary sociopolitical conflicts. Written by Jose-Luis Bocquet. Art and cover by Catel Muller.
In 1895 the Lumière brothers invented the cinematograph. Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922.
Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company.
Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history.

1st printing. Written by Heather Lang and Jamie Harper. Art and cover by Jamie Harper. Theres strength in numbers out there in the wild! In a lively comics-style format, the creators of Supermoms! and Superdads! deliver a funny, fascinating look at some ingenious ways that animal squads survive. Did you know that when honeybees find a food source, they do a dance to convey the direction, distance, and yumminess level to their hive mates? Or that chickadees add extra dees to their calls to warn their flock of danger? Or that a meerkat standing like a sentry may well be guarding its mob while they eat? Sometimes the key is divvying up tasks, like when beavers build a dam, or its combining differences—like when a sea anemone protects a hermit crab with its stinging tentacles, then gets a ride and some tasty tidbits from the crab. Or its power in numbers, as when hundreds of thousands of starlings fly in a murmuration, foiling predators trying to lock in on a target. With fun, fact-filled panels, Heather Lang and Jamie Harper delve into the ways animals band together to stay safe and thrive, from orcas to ostriches, spiny lobsters to snow monkeys, leaf cutter ants to zebras and more. Aspiring naturalists can find out more about the animals in the back matter, along with an array of resources for continuing to explore. Hardcover, 11 1/2-in. x 10 1/4-in., 40 pages, full color. The dazzling, provocative work of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) would come to define the vibrant New York art scene of the late '70s and early '80s. Punk, jazz, graffiti, hip-hop: his work drew heavily on the cultural trappings of lower Manhattan. Today, Basquiat's influence can be seen not only in fine art but in fashion, design, and music. This stunning graphic novel captures the dramatic life and exhilarating times of this archetypal New York artist, covering everything from the SAMO graffiti project to his first solo show, from his relationship with Andy Warhol to the substance abuse that would cost him his life. This playful, authoritative biography shows Basquiat's work to be more important, his themes more urgent, than ever before.

Story and art by Typex.
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is a towering figure in European art history: a virtuoso painter, draftsman, and etcher whose enduring influence can be seen in the work of artists from J. M. W. Turner to Francis Bacon and beyond. A prolific self-portraitist, Rembrandt is a deeply familiar figure, yet little is known of his life and character. In this first graphic biography of the Dutch master, Typex pieces together the facts that are known about Rembrandt's life to weave a captivating story about a miller's son who, after a brief spell of fame, suffered the fate of so many artists: financial ruin.
It is a story about life and death, love and bereavement, success and loss.

An original graphic novel biography of Andy Warhol, the cultural icon and Pop-art legend. Celebrated during his lifetime as much for his personality as for his paintings, Warhol (1928-1987) is the man who invented Pop Art, the notion of 15 minutes of fame, and the idea that an artist could be as illustrious as the work he creates. With a unique, focused look at Warhol's life, this graphic novel biography offers insight into the turning point of Warhol's career and the time leading up to the creation of the Thirteen Most Wanted Men mural for the 1964 World's Fair, when Warhol clashed with urban planner Robert Moses and architect Philip Johnson and emerged to become one of the most significant artists of the 20th century.

Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles depicts a decisive moment in the life of the great Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel: the moment when he doubted surrealism and contemplated embracing a more social type of cinema. At this crucial turning point in his career, he wanted to change the world by showing the hidden heart of reality. Buñuel was deeply affected by the harshness of Las Hurdes and the extreme misery of the people who lived in this remote region, so with his friend, the movie producer Ramón Acín, he began work on the pseudo-documentary Land Without Bread. But in the mind of the great surrealist, reality inevitably clashed with dreams and childhood memories, threatening both the film and his friendship with Acín. It was at this moment that the Buñuel of the future was born.

Catalyst, a collection of short stories from established artists such as Asia Alfasi, Catherine Anyango Grünewald, Sonia Leong, and Woodrow Phoenix, aims to reflect up-and-coming new voices and the diversity and wealth of talent in the UK comics scene. United by a single theme-"catalyst"-the contributors have each written and drawn an eight-page story that explores ideas of reaction and transformation.
Collecting stories from a range of artists of color across the UK, this comics anthology unites their voices under a single theme: 'catalyst'. In one story, the accidental witnessing of a horrific scene turns a regular day into a nightmare; in another, the truth of what it really took to put a man on the moon is revealed. From tales of misplaced memories to battles with the id, Catalyst offers a look at the consequences of big and small acts alike.
Showcasing a mix of established and emerging artists, this collection imagines the myriad ways in which a chain of events might end in either euphoria or catastrophe. Sometimes both.
Edited by Ayoola Solarin, this provocative, intriguing and revelatory anthology invites readers to consider the situations, people and events that might accelerate change in their own lives and in our society as a whole.
Featuring Stories by Asia Alfasi, Charlotte Bailey, Jason Chuang, Dominique Duong, Catherine Anyango Gruenwald, Shuning Ji, Pris Lemons, Sonia Leong, Calico N.M., Tyrell Osborne, and Woodrow Phoenix.
