Mark Rothko's work is among the most recognizable in modern art history. His huge color-field works enjoy enormous popularity for their luminosity, moodiness, and immersive qualities. But he didn't always paint in bold, simple swaths of color.
This graphic biography traces Rothko's entire life, from his boyhood emigration from Russia to America, to his suicide in 1970. While Rothko the artist was largely misunderstood during his lifetime, this unique graphic biography offers a way of making sense of his life and of decoding the visual language he invented.

Volume 1, 1st Printing - During an impressive period—2005 through 2012—Mark Schultz turned his attention to producing a body of personal works and private commissions. The results, collected in the five Various Drawings volumes, focused on subjects about which Schultz feels most passionate. Among them are characters and tableaux pulled from mythology, science-fantasy and pulp adventure, featuring steely warriors and femme fatales—his popular pulpette women included. Schultz's Xenozoic world is profusely explored through a series of dynamic compositions with his protagonists, Jack and Hannah, placed in a variety of impossibly dangerous situations. In addition to his self-generated pieces, there are many examples of Schultz's commercial works done for comics, film and books, as well as renderings of newly discovered dinosaurs and more. Portfolio: The Complete Various Drawings compiles the 275 drawings found in the original five volumes as well as the cover illustrations and special bookplates. Reformatted into this oversized version, the scan for each image has been reviewed and meticulously adjusted. All images originally reproduced in black-and-white are now presented in full color. Hardcover, 11.5" x 12", 272 pages, full color. Cover price $50.00.

1st printing. Based on the Story by Mark Twain. Adapted by Seymour Chwast. Mark Twain's lambasting of phony, war-mongering patriotism reinterpreted by one of our finest contemporary illustrators. Written in 1910 in his 70th year, Mark Twain, having lived through 14 wars waged by his own country on others, declined to publish this poetic despairing reproof against patriotism. His regular illustrator Daniel Beard even urged Twain to issue the piece, to which the author replied, "No, I have told the whole truth in that, and only dead men can tell the truth in this world. It can be published after I am dead." It took 13 years after his passing for that prophecy to be fulfilled - and now, another 102 years later, the legendary illustrator and graphic designer Seymour Chwast (himself 92 years young) has fulfilled Beard's dream of enriching the fable with illustration. Chwast brings every aspect of his skills to this interpretation: drawing, design, typography, type design, pastel painting, and computer color all sit alongside each other with Twain's text in pages that expand and pace the original. With another century and a quarter of warfare passed since its writing, Chwast's artwork echoes advances in technology but Twain's message about the pointlessness of patriotism as a marketing hook for death is only more pointed today. SEYMOUR CHWAST (b. 1931) is one of the most highly regarded graphic designers in American history. He has executed hundreds of advertising campaigns, designed multiple popular typefaces, illustrated or been the subject of dozens of books, and created several childrens' books of his own. Referred to as "the left-handed designer," he has worked social commentary into his design for decades, including through his biannual journal The Nose. Chwast founded the design group Push Pin Studios with Milton Glaser, Edward Sorel, and Reynold Ruffins in 1954 and continues to head and work via the company at age 92. Hardcover, 104 pages, PC. Cover price $22.99.

1st printing. Written by JOHN RHETT THOMAS. Art and cover by MARKO DJURDJEVIC. Marko Djurdjevic burst onto the scene from obscurity, a passionate artist sharing his work online. The quality of his illustrations needed no explanation beyond that which was obvious at first glance: the sleekly stylized figure work, his masterful command of colors, and the layers and subtext that formed an essential part of his vision. It was a short trip from anonymity to his current status as one of Marvel's most compelling cover artists. This lush art book will feature a treasure trove of Marko's cover illustrations - plus sketches, designs and extensive discussion about the process that has made him one of Marvel's most popular artists. In collaboration with the artist himself, and with input from his peers, THE ART OF MARKO DJURDJEVIC will be the kind of deluxe art book you'll be proud to show off to friends and fellow art fans. Hardcover, 11 1/2-in. x 10 1/2-in., 200 pages, full color. Cover price $49.99.
