In this first landmark issue, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and Ant Man form the Avengers in "The Coming of the Avengers!", script by Stan Lee, pencils by Jack Kirby, inks by Dick Ayers; Loki, having been previously captured by Thor, is being held prisoner at the Isle of Silence in Asgard; His physical form may be confined there, but by means of thought projection his disembodied self travels to Earth in search of revenge; He spots Thor in his human identity of Dr. Don Blake, but resists defeating him as it would be a hollow victory compared to defeating him as Thor; After hours of searching, Loki happens across the Hulk and devises a wicked plan to entice Blake to transform into Thor; Hours later, newspapers print articles about the Hulk being on the rampage again and a manhunt begins; The Hulk's friend, Rick Jones, reads the article with disbelief and meets with members of the Teen Brigade in order to find help to track Hulk down to find the truth; They attempt to contact the Fantastic Four but Loki interferes with the radio signal, diverting it to Don Blake; He decides to transform into Thor to help the Teen Brigade; Unknown to Loki, the radio signal is also picked up by Ant-Man, the Wasp, and Iron Man, who also travel to assist; Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp pursue the Hulk to an auto factory in Detroit; Thor appears with Loki to clear Hulk's name; Suddenly Loki makes himself radioactive forcing the heroes to retreat; Luckily, Loki stands over a trapdoor and Ant-Man's ants trigger a switch, dropping him into a lead-lined tank; Upon celebrating their victory, Ant-Man and the Wasp point out how well they could work as a team, and that they should work together in future; The Wasp decides they should call themselves the Avengers, and everybody agrees. 36 pgs., full color. $0.12. Giant-Man becomes Goliath and, along with the Wasp, rejoins the Avengers in "Among Us Walks... a Goliath!", script by Stan Lee, art by Don Heck; Henry Pym calls the Avengers, saying the Wasp is missing, and that he is Giant-Man; The Wasp has been captured by the Collector and the Beetle; Giant-Man renames himself Goliath; They enter the Collector's lair and get separated and captured; Goliath escapes and frees the other Avengers; They rescue the Wasp and force the Collector to escape with the Beetle using a time machine; However, when Goliath tries to shrink down to his normal size he collapses and faints at 10 feet tall; First appearance of The Collector. "This Power Unleashed!", script by Stan Lee, pencils by Don Heck, inks by Frank Giacoia; The Avengers find themselves unable to revive the fallen Goliath; A doctor informs them that he will recover but must never attempt to shrink any further than his present 10-foot size; Goliath storms out in anger; Black Widow is captured by Russians, brainwashed and sent to destroy the Avengers; She enlists the help of the Swordsman and Power Man; The Avengers are all captured with the exception of Goliath and the Wasp; They free the captive Avengers, and after a brief battle, the Black Widow, the Swordsman and Power Man all escape. "Frenzy in a Far-Off Land," script by Stan Lee, pencils by Don Heck, inks by Frank Giacoia; Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch take a leave of absence from the Avengers due to their dwindling powers; Goliath also sets off to South America to try and find a cure, hearing his old college professor Dr. Anton is there; Black Widow is ordered to destroy the Avengers again with the help of the Swordsman and Power Man; The Avengers find the Black Widow and co. but Hawkeye wants to go alone, as it is personal to him; Meanwhile, Goliath lands in South America and finds Dr. Anton has been captured by the Keeper of the Flame; He tries to save him, but is overwhelmed then brought to safety by Prince Rey, who leads a rebel force against the Keeper; Hawkeye defeats the Swordsman but is trapped by Power Man; The Black Widow saves him, finding herself unable to harm Hawkeye as she loves him; Captain America and the Wasp leave to help Goliath. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch discover they will regain their full powers; Bill Foster, being African-American, gets attacked by the Sons of the Serpent; Captain America goes to Nick Fury for more information about them; The Avengers vow to defeat the Sons of the Serpent, but Captain America is kidnapped. "To Smash a Serpent," script by Stan Lee, art by Don Heck; With Captain America hostage, the Avengers can't attack the serpents; Bill Foster walks out on Goliath, because of this; Captain America seems to have been brainwashed by the Sons, turning him into a fascist; The Avengers attend a Sons of the Serpent meeting while Hawkeye and the Black Widow attempt a rescue mission to save Captain America; During the meeting, Goliath argues with the Sons of the Serpent, but is attacked by a brainwashed Captain America; After a brief battle, Goliath follows the escaping Serpents to their ship; Black Widow finds the real Captain America captive and rescues him. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch return in "The Ultroids Attack!", script by Roy Thomas, art by Don Heck; The Scarlet Witch returns, and she explains that Quicksilver has been kidnapped by a UFO; Hawkeye tries to apply Black Widow for membership, but Goliath refuses; The Avengers fly to the Balkans, accompanied by the Black Widow; There they discover a huge computer, named Ixar, draining information from the village's Burgomeister; Ixar's plan is to extract the powers from the Avengers and use it to make special Ultroids; They also discover Scarlet Witch to be a fake Ultroid called Ultrana; Ultrana and the Ultroids attack the Avengers, capturing them; As the Black Widow is not an Avenger, she is sent to be destroyed. "Suddenly... the Sub-Mariner!", script by Roy Thomas, pencils by Don Heck, inks by George Roussos (as George Bell); The Scarlet Witch collapses after the battle in the previous issue; Black Widow steals an experimental jet from General Ross; Meanwhile, the Sub-Mariner attacks a submarine destroying underwater wildlife, then decides to attack the base it came from; The Avengers receive a call from Captain America, warning that a dangerous item called the "Cosmic Cube" has been spotted near the base and the Avengers should secure it; Quicksilver stays with the weak Scarlet Witch and the Avengers arrive at the base and battle with Sub-Mariner, where Hercules unwittingly mentions the cube to him; The Sub-Mariner flees, returns with the cube and the battle starts again.
